Introduction

When I entered the Apple Store Hillsdale for the first time in an honest attempt, I wasn’t looking to purchase anything. I simply needed to get somebody to look at trying to get a cell phone that would not stop freezing on me. I can always remember how easy the entire thing was; no pushy sales talk, no confusing runaround, but someone that really knew what they was doing. That visit is what makes me always go back when I need help with my Apple products at this particular store and it’s the reason I always come back here.

Whether you’re living nearby San Mateo or simply heading your way, the Apple Store Hillsdale does a great deal more than sells gadgets. In this guide I want to give you the idea of what the store is actually like and what you can do there and some things I wish I had known before my first visit.

1. Where You’ll Find It

The store is located within the Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo, CA. If you’ve walked around the mall before, you’ll know that it’s easy to pick out, as Apple stores are known for their clean and glassy fronts that appear to be the same, regardless of the city they’re located in. The area around Hillsdale has been totally remodeled a couple of years ago and has a modern and open look that gives you lots of opportunities to get coffee or eat a meal before and after you shop.

Parking is typically easy, but may become congested on weekends. I have been taught to be at the store early in the day to secure an easy parking spot and a quieter store. The mall is also accessible via public transit, so if you don’t want to worry about parking, then you can skip it.

2. Clearly, the Store Does Offer a Product

Obviously the store has a product available.

At first people think of the Apple Store Hillsdale as a place to get the latest in iPhone technology; yes it is, but it is also a place for much more. But there’s a lot more going on under that roof.

The complete collection will be on show – iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, the Apple Watch, AirPods and all the accessories that go with them. The good thing about it is that everything is out and accessible to touch! I am the type of person who needs to see something in my hands before making my decision and this store allows me to do just that. You can actually test the camera, feel the load, navigate through the interface and get a true feel for if it’s something that fits your lifestyle or not.

The store offers more than just hardware; they also help with trade-in, financing, and set-up. The employees can transfer data from a previous phone or even from an Android phone so you don’t lose your photos and contacts when changing. Over the years that service has helped me a lot.

3. Genius Bar, Tech Support

The Genius Bar is to me the heart of this place. This is where to go when something breaks, slows down or just doesn’t make sense. There are a lot of times that I will have to pull my hair out if I didn’t have the help of the team there to take care of me from issues of cracked screens to dead batteries to software glitches.

My suggestion: Make an appointment before you go. Sometimes there is a possibility for walk-in, but at times you may wait a long time, especially during a busy time. Through what Apple often calls “Apple Pre-booking,” you can reserve a time on the Apple website or in the Apple Support app, and chances are you’ll be dealt a much more easygoing visit. I found myself in/out quicker than I would have thought, and the person assisting me explained the problem in simple terms rather than jargon.

You may find that many repairs and replacements come to you for little or nothing if you are still covered by warranty or AppleCare. Before you assume you’ll have to pay full price, it is always best to check your coverage.

4. Today at Apple Sessions

A lot of shoppers fail to realize that the store offers free sessions. Classes are practical and include topics such as photography, music, coding, art and the best use of devices. They’re really free and there is no purchase necessary to join.

I attended a photo shoot one time purely for curiosity, and left and began using my iPhone camera in a variety of ways I had never considered. These sessions can be good for people who are new to this or practice a skill to get it right, it’s a little gem to make the store feel more like a community space than a shop.

5. Here Are Some Tips to Ease Your Visit

I am kind of an expert at this after a few trips here, I have certain habits.

If possible, go in the weekday mornings. People aren’t as pressed, and staff will have more time.

Schedule your Genius repair appointment online, not by when it’s available.

Back-up your device against any repair appointment in case.

If you are having warranty problems, please take your purchase information or Apple ID with you.

If you are purchasing a large item, see the web first to make sure that you aren’t traveling for nothing.

None of these are difficult, but they combine to make an otherwise aggravating task a breeze.

6. In-Store vs Online Purchases

I confess that these days I do buy a lot of stuff online. However, sometimes it’s easier to stick with walking to the store. There’s nothing like being there to get expert advice, hands-on time with a product or immediate assistance.

The in-store team will be there to answer all your questions that you may not have thought of, highlight some information you may not have been aware of, and to help you avoid purchasing the wrong item. I believe that human guidance is worth the journey when I’m making a first major purchase, like my first Mac, or a new iPhone that I’ll be keeping for a long long time.

7. Martins Mills Is an Institution That Is Indeed Unique

It’s not just the products that make me love the Apple Store Hillsdale; I can get any of those items anywhere. It’s the experience they have around them. The staff approach problems as problems to be solved, and not as an excuse to upsell. It is easy to maneuver around in the space. Also, I was able to combine the shopping and support and learning in one spot and that makes it feel like I’m doing something useful even if I’m not spending a dollar.

It has become my go-to place for friends and family when they are in doubt about their devices or looking for something new. Trust doesn’t happen instantly, and this store acquired it visit by visit.

8. Final Thoughts

The Apple Store Hillsdale is more than just a place to shop, it’s a place to be fixed, learn and receive real answers from people who know the things. If you are purchasing your first device, troubleshooting a repair that just will not get done or simply want to know about a free class, there is a reason to step through those doors.

If you’ve wanted to visit, my sincere recommendation is to make an appointment, arrive early and allow time to explore. You may come for one thing, but leave with so much more to explore in this corner of the mall.
